Following the Bridgeport Board of Education’s decision to eliminate adult English language classes at the Parent Center, Matilde, a 25-year veteran language teacher in Bridgeport became immediately concerned about her students. With opportunities to learn English disappearing, Matilde now teaches at Burroughs and offer adult learners morning and evening classes four time a week.
“Knowing how to speak and read English is so important to being successful in our community. Learning English offers our students vital opportunities we take for granted. They are now able to meet with their children’s teachers, pass their citizenship tests and build relationships with their neighbors. I teach because I love to see the confidence and dignity students have when they understand what is happening around them and are no longer afraid or feel isolated”.
