Olena, her husband, and their two sons arrived in the United States from war-torn Ukraine, a journey marked by loss and uncertainty. Their hometown bombarded, they were left with nothing, taking refuge in an underground shelter before escaping to Poland. However, with the looming shadow of the conflict, trauma and concerns for their boys’ well-being, they yearned for a more secure future in the United States.
Through the Uniting for Ukraine program, they found hope. An American family from a nearby community agreed to become their sponsor and undertake the shared responsibility to support Olena’s family. This act of kindness, which Olena describes as a miracle, brought them to our community – a place promising opportunity for a good education and a safer environment for their children.
Determined to adapt and thrive in her new home, Olena enrolled in our English classes at Burroughs. These classes, offered free of charge, are more than just lessons in language—they are gateways to new possibilities. For Olena, they were the key to unlocking her potential in a new world.
